Dancing on Ice star Brendan Cole reveals real reason why he left Strictly

He says the BBC pushed a "narrative" about him.

Dancing on Ice star Brendan Cole has addressed what he says is the real reason why he was axed from Strictly Come Dancing.

The former Strictly pro had a highly publicised split from show bosses in 2018, later publicly confirming the BBC had left him feeling "emotional" and "raw" by choosing not to renew his contract.

This year has seen Cole back on screens, as a contestant this time, as a runner-up in the most recent series of Dancing on Ice. Speaking to The Sun, he credited the ITV show with showing more of his true personality.

"I came on Dancing on Ice hoping to show people that Strictly only showed one side of me. They pushed that narrative for 15 series and it was tiring," he said.

"That's actually not me. I muck around a lot and that wasn't shown – but it is being shown on Dancing on Ice. We've all been shown in really lovely lights."

The actor went on: "I'm not fiercely competitive. I'm competitive with myself. If I get something wrong or do something that's not where I can be then I'm immensely peed off with myself.

"If I win or lose it doesn't matter – but it is nice to win don't get me wrong. This show has been a really wonderful experience to be a part of and enjoy."

Digital Spy has reached out to the BBC for a response to Cole's complaints about his time working on Strictly Come Dancing.

The dancer had been one of the original Strictly Come Dancing professionals, going on to win the first series with his first celebrity partner Natasha Kaplinsky.

He was subsequently placed in memorable couples with Lulu, Emmerdale's Claire King, Hollywood star Kelly Brook, popstars Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Anastacia as well as Destiny's Child member Michelle Williams.

Strictly Come Dancing will be returning on BBC One later this year.
